The Good, Bad & Ugly of Design

When we say “Good Design” what comes up in your mind? A simple art, a visually
colered art? What is necessarily needed to turn a Design into a good design? In the world that we live design is subjective and can’t be measured.

Once a famous Designer called Dieter Rams believed that he could express design in some of most important principles that he believed and became known as the “Ten Principles of Good design” where he described being:

  1. Innovative
  2. Makes a product useful
  3. Aesthetic
  4. Makes a product understandable
  5. Unobtrusive
  6. Honest
  7. Long-lasting
  8. Thorough down to the last detail
  9. Environmentally- friendly
  10. And Good design is as little design as possible

This principles became known on the Design world as being part of an important
movement for some brands, including one of the most famous brands in the world, Apple.

As mentioned before, Design is subjective and what is seen as good by you may not be seen as good by another person but, if the design is objective and accomplishes its needs than we have reached the goal that is having a good design reaching the final destination, the viewer and client.

But what happens when you run across a “BAD DESIGN” ?

Some designs surpass the tolerable level and become bad by running against its
purpose and meaning.

A design can be bad when spreads an offensive or hatefull message. A bad design can sink your name, or your company’s name, or worse, someone’s company or brand.

Imagine you create a design for someone, but that design will be across the world and you didn’t research if the meaning for it will be the same in every where, what has a meaning in the US may not have the same meaning in Japan, or in Brazil.

Design does not necessarily have to be beautiful to be good. There are some Ugly
designs across the world that will deliver the good message to the viewer but not
necessarily in the most amazing ways. A potato chips bag can be ugly
but will deliver that it is potato inside the bag.

We do understand that not all designs will be gorgeous when created but give it more time to evolve what you have done. Give an overview of what could be better, refine your search and use the resources at your favor, internet is there for you to search for ideas to make a beautiful design.

Having certain of what you design will make you a better professional in the market.

Stand out by making good designs, provocative designs in the good sense, and by having at least one of the 10 principles listed above.

Be good, don’t be bad and specialy don’t be ugly on design!
